I got A Single Man on Blu-Ray and I've just watched it. I saw it at the cinema and it was amazing and it was just as amazing second time round. Definitely a career-best performance from Colin Firth.

What did you think of Julianne Moore's Brit accent?

I thought it was a really good film. I love Colin Firth.

Julianne's accent wasn't bad. I've heard a lot worse.

Sadly not. Commentary by Tom Ford and a Making Of feature. It's worth getting the Blu-Ray though for the visual element of the movie.

Give Me Your Hand (Donne-Moi Le Main)
Twin brothers Antoine and Quentin decide to walk to Spain from France to attend the funeral of the mother they never knew. Although always fighting with each other the relationship becomes strained between the brothers when one of them has a gay fling.

I really enjoyed this movie. There are quite a lot of scenes where there's no dialogue but it doesn't detract from the story. Although the Carril brothers have never acted before (except in a short film) you wouldn't know it. There is some great cinematography as well. Definitely worth watching.

There are also quite a lot of extras. There's a 25 minute Making of feature, interviews with the cast and director, deleted scenes, the trailer for the movie and two short films by the same director (one with the Carril brothers).

Finally bought Le Clan. If you haven't seen if before it stars Stephane Rideau (Presque Rien and Nicolas Cazale (Le Grand Voyage) in an "epic portrait of simmering masculinity and its impact on a struggling family living in the shadow of the Alps. The brutal boredom and violent episodes that punctuate their lives threatens to tear apart the sibling bond that has united them. Together they face up to their domineering father and learn to deal with the secrets of their individual lives."

I can definitely recommend this movie though not for vegetarians. Unfortunately you don't see as much of Stephan Rideau this time but you do get to see all of Nicolas Cazale.

Raging Sun, Raging Sky
I'm not sure whether to recommend this film or not. It has to be the longest and weirdest gay film I've ever seen. When I ordered it I didn't notice the running time and when I finally got it I thought it was a typo. It comes in at 3 hours and 12 minutes. It's primarily shot in black and white with some colour. Oh, and there's not much dialogue.

I'm not sure how to explain the plot. It starts with a woman wandering around streets listening to people's thoughts. She then meets this young guy and they have sex and then she tells him (through thoughts) that he's destined to meet the man of his dreams (even though he's just shagged her). The next hour and a half (or so) are spent with him and the guy he's destined to be with trying to find each other while having sex with other guys along the way.

When they finally meet and make love it gets even weirder. It goes into some sort of mythical world where the original protagonist is abducted by a rival lover and the guy he's destined to be with has to rescue him. The original protagonist dies but the guy he's destined to be with brings him back to life and kills the rival lover. However the guys he's destined to be with then dies himself. However it all turns out to be some sort of dream and the lovers end up together.

On the plus side the two leads spend a large part of the movie naked (especially in the mythical world) and I liked the guy whom the original protagonist was destined to be with.

I did nearl;y give up on it at one point but ended up watching it to the end. It did win a Teddy Award at last year's Berlin International Film Festival so it must have something going for it but I'm not sure what.

lol_2.gif As I said it was just about worth it for Jorge Becerra spending a lot of the film naked.

"Otto, or Up With Dead People" - Utterly unclassifiable film by cult director Bruce La Bruce about a young gay zombie who may or may not be actually dead. The gore is too unrealistic for this to really be called a horror film, as surreal as it is its not funny enough to be a comedy and the sex scenes blur the lines with pornography. For all its bizarreness its not a bad or unwatchable film and I guess the political messages within it can be read on several levels. On a personal level the extent to which I found the lead actor attractive is making me wonder if it really is time to start seeing a shrink, lol.

Longtime Companion.

Pretty average to poor, early AIDS movie.

Hot young Dermot Mulroney - no nudity.

The Masseur.

2005 film from Phillipines.

Not as much flesh as you'd imagine.

Watchable.

I recently rented Dream Boy. The film follows Nathan, a shy schoolboy, whose family moves to a small, rural town in the deep south of America in an attempt to run away from their own crumbling family life. Nathan falls in love with his neighbour, Roy, and they begin a secret relationship; neither are 'out' as gay and Nathan has a family secret which prevents him from being completely open with Roy. The film follows their short but emotional relationship.

I think it'll appeal to anyone who likes a hear-warming, feel-good gay relationship movie that isn't too in-depth. It felt to me that it bites of a little more than it could chew and because some of the main themes couldn't get played out fully it feels as if it is full of clichés and predictability. But, having said that, it wasn't a typical Peccadillo film: There was clearly more to it than just good-looking actors. What I felt it lacked in plot it made up for in acting and depth of characters. Nathan's Mum made the movie for me - she was a treat. I just wish the ending was a little bit more certain - because for me it feels as if they left it ambiguous because they didn't know where to take it. That's a shame because it had the potential to be amazing.

It reminded me of The Mudge Boy, actually. I'd rather The Mudge Boy. But, still, I'll most definitely re-watch because it just had 'something' about it. I just can't pinpoint what exactly that was.

They changed the ending from the book to make it more ambiguous, in the book its much more explicit what has actually happened to them both.

But yeah on the whole I agree, a well-made and acted film that was much better than some of its counterparts in the "coming of age" Queer Cinema cannon.

Mascara 1987 -starring Charlotte Rampling, Chris Sarrazin and famous transsexuals Eva Robin's and (friend of Bowie) Romy Haag.

Murder, homosexuality, opera, full frontal nudity of a "chick with a dick" and gowns by Claude Montana. All it was lacking was any sense or suspense.

Weird Eurotrash but I enjoyed it in a perverse kinda way!

I've just been watching 'Close to Leo' on the earlier recommendation of Yorkshire Guy (thanks!). I really enjoyed it: It's a film about a teenager coming to terms with his HIV+ status from the point of view of his younger brother. Unusual twist. Really, really enjoyed it. biggrin.gif

Last night I watched a bizzare little film called 'Eros Erosion' which the director, Anna Thew, calls an 'image poem'. Very arty; too arty for me (and I normally like that kind of film). I found it extremely hard to follow and found little reward from doing so. Apparently, "Through a rush of abstract and allegorical connections the film touches on transience and desire, and the silence and concealment surrounding sexuality, love, death, AIDS, and the fear of bereavement." Um.

Yeah, you definitely get a different perspective on what you see in the film from reading the book. There's quite a lot of differences so if you liked the film I'd definitely say give the book a go.

Yesterday I had the, er, pure delight of watching FAQs: A film about a drag queen who took in some troubled gay men, tried to get them back on their feet, and... God knows what happened next. A fair bit of nudity, quite a few gun shots, and - that was it. Worked well as a feel-good film, I guess, but 'feelgood' isn't my kind of thing; I need a rape or suicide before I really get in to it. I guess that's my fault, not the film's.

"Newcastle Australia" - Australian coming of age film about a group of surfers. Xavier Samuel plays the gay younger brother of the main character, who develops a crush on one of his brother's surfer buddies. A bit naff and cheesy in places but actually seems a much better film on second viewing. Stunning cinematography both in terms of the scenery and the totty on display.

"Speedway Junky" - US indie film from the late 90s about 3 young men who turn to street hustling for differing reasons - the straight one needs the money, the gay one is looking for love and the bi one just loves sex. Jesse Bradford, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Jordan Brower star.

I thought Newcastle, Australia was really good (and not just for all the male nudity).

Just watching 'Forgive and Forget' with John Simm.

Just watching Shelter, didn't know Brad Rowe was in it.
Very very good story, although I thought his sister was a dick.

I recently watched Patrik 1,5 which is a Swedish film about a gay married couple who want to adopt a baby. They get approved and finally think that they are going to have a little one-and-a-half year old baby stay with them, but, due to a small but massively substantial typo, the child they get is a a 15-year old yob (hence the odd punctuation in the title). The film is part comedy, part drama, part weepy. All the actors play their roles superbly and I would recommend it.

Priest, with the excellent Linus Roache is on BBC4 Sunday 21.11.10 at 11pm.

Tells the story of a Roman Catholic priest (Linus Roache) trying to come to terms with his homosexuality and remain a conscientious and honourable priest.

It's quite superb. If you haven't seen it, please try to watch or set the recorder.

Just watched Eclipse. It's not officially gay-themed, but you can easily read in a subtext between Edward and Jacob. Even Ebert did. If not, Taylor Lautner is "naked" in it, skillfully covered of course, but it's still fun to put it on slow-motion and see if they slipped up.

Just watched Goldfish Memory.

It was watchable. You could watch it with almost anybody. Bit like a gay/bi/straight edition of Friends.

I got Boys On Film 5: Candy Boy from my mate for Christmas. I think this volume had the best selection of short films. Sweat was good for David Paisley but I was hoping we'd see a bit more of him. The only short where I wasn't sure about the ending was TwoYoungMen, UT. Blokes, Last Call and Far West were both good for their twists at the end. David, Go Go Reject and James were sweet in their own ways. Unfortunately the title film didn't seem to have subtitles (even though subtitles were On) so it was a bit harder to follow the story.

Some recs, don't know if they have already been made, or if I have already made them but hey, what's the harm in refreshing;

From Beginning to End ( 2009 )
The film tells the story of two male brothers that develop a very close relationship when they are kids and such relationship becomes an incestuous love when they grow up.
My Review; this should have been disturbing, and first it kinda was, but ultimately I didn't care...it was one of those sort of wrong sort of hot things. Just be prepared for subtitles.

Mysterious Skin ( 2004 )
A teenage hustler and a young man obsessed with alien abductions cross paths, together discovering a horrible, liberating truth.
My Review; ok so those who find child abuse to be too harsh a subject for them, don't watch this. Brilliantly acted my the male lead though, and according to specialistics in the field of psychology, an accurate window into the mind of an abused child once they have become an adult.

Shelter ( 2009 )
When his college dreams are sidelined by family obligations, a young man finds comfort in surfing with his best friend's brother.
My Review; light hearted coming out story, nothing really disturbing or horrifying about it, an easy watch, and though not exceptionally filmed, decently acted with an adequate amount of eyecandy in the two males who are the focus of the story (older guy is a bit of a hotty).

I saw a really good gay movie at the cinema today called Loose Cannons. It's an Italian movie about a guy called Thomasso who decides to come out to his family but has his big revelation put on hold when his brother makes the exact same announcement. Thomasso's brother is disowned by the family and Thomasso has to take over the family business. However chaos ensues when Thomasso's boyfriend and gay friends tunr up and are invited to stay by the unsuspecting family.

It was a really good story and very funny. Definitely worth a watch. It'll be available on DVD in Spring if you can't catch it at the cinema.

I just watched Watercolors earlier and enjoyed the first 90% of the film
The last 15 minutes or so however where depressing as fuck and spoilt it, I felt
And the ending was completely rubbish and didn't seem relevant to the rest of the story at all
It felt like lazy writing to me, the last part of the story didn't seem to fit with the rest of the film
I guess it might have been worth watching for the first 90% though

Last gay film I saw was Make The Yuletide Gay, which was pretty light-hearted, camp, badly-acted at points, but extremely sweet and had a couple of very endearing leads. I saw it a couple of times. Nice Christmas feel-good film about a closeted guy going home for Christmas and getting an impromptu visit from his camp boyfriend. Certainly isn't a masterpiece and nor is it deep and thoughtful. It's just... Nice!
