I was thinking recently about the interrelationship between the views on topics posted on this forum (namely the 'view' forum) and the number of comments.

My intention here isn't to stand on any toes... Unless you like that? bleh.gif

There are 43940 (as of when this was written) registered users on this fine forum, yet when a topic, for example, a recent one I started (on Theo Hutchcraft, from the band Hurts) received 820 views in the first 3 hours after I started it, received one comment. I'm not complaining about that, it's nice to see people have shared interests. This happens on many topics, many thousands of views, but sometimes only enough comments to count on my fingers (and toes)

Is that one person, revisiting LOADS of times, or are people just checking it out? Are any of the 819 that didn't comment, interested at all in the topic, or find the person attractive? Again, I'm not talking about my topic alone, that was an example. Even on topics about the forever lovely Tom Daley, 20+ comments seem to be the norm.

I do understand that if everyone commented, then all hell would break loose!

Not a complaint, just an observation.

It's an awesome thread on a majorly hot guy.

I'm intending to add a few more pics of sexy Theo later if that's ok with you?

Little bit of history here to add some perspective to the debate...

Back in the day (c.2000/01), there were just 2 forums : ViewFM & TalkFM.

The prior was strictly for pictures only, with the latter for chatter (how poetic).

View is comparatively bustling with comments these days. Don't knock it lol_2.gif

I've also heard him say "Just gimme the knighthood" which is somewhat less endearing, and even less likely.

In fairness, lately I don't have a clue who are the guys on the threads. So I click in to discover some "famous" 20 something year old boy who won't appeal to me at all, so there's no need for any comment and I just move on.

Well it all depends what floats your particular boat doesn't it?

There is a predominance of younger guys posted, probably because the overall age demographic of the forum is at the younger end of the spectrum.

If you're a young guy too then all well and good, if you're a old duffer who likes that sort of thing then all well and good too.

In fairness, all of us can't be expected to know who everyone is. I do find it irritating that names are put in the thread titles without any explanation of who they are. An actor in an obscure soap, a footballer in a Z-rated league, a singer who's had a pisspoor song at no 79, a Big Brother contestant who no-one except his mum has heard of? A subtitle would always been good.

Like Dominus, I've been around this board for a while and don't feel the need to comment on every post I look at.

I also find the board educational like ic1male.

There are a lot of fit looking famous men out there all around the world in all sorts of different media.

I am not an avid cycle fan for example so this month's current mega post opens your eyes to new men.

As is generally the case, different types of men appeal to different types of user to the forum. I don't find the need like some to put degrading comments on every post of a bloke I find to be unattractive.

Do I like Bieber? In some posts he can look fit, in others he looks really dodgy, should I add to all of those users who call him a lesbian? I don't see the point, isn't there enough hatred out there aimed at gay men without us adding to it?

Oh and just so I'm not misunderstood, I am not claiming Bieber is gay straight, bi, transgender or a transexual. I am just using him as an example.
BlondBoys
Just under 44000 users, but how many Active users?

There's no accounting for different tastes - that's evident from the range of people featured in View - so from that, not everyone is going to look at every post (even if they do know who the post subjects are!)

Here, as in real life, not everyone feels the need to offer comment on everything they see?

But, why sometimes, do people go out of their way to post nasty comments? Takes all sorts, I guess...

I kind of think of it like this:
Imagine someone had planted a lovely flower bed in their garden, tended them and watered them till they were blooming, out for all the passing world to admire, maybe even to raise a smile. Then someone walks all the way up their garden path, taps on their front door. When the door opens they calmly say. "I think your flowers look like SHIT!!!!" and then walk all the way back down the path again, on their way. Probably to another person's garden.

Disagree. How boring would this place be if everyone said, "He's hot." on every single thread... It has nothing to do with the original poster either! This thought had never even crossed my mind in over 10 years os posting!

I comment when I think someone's hot and when I think someone is most definitely not! Or if I just think they're a twat smile.gif I love it when there's a debate or when people are being completely honest. It's interesting to find out what other people like or don't like or to influence/be influenced by other peoples opinions.

Well, ofcourse it would be boring if everyone just wrote "He's hot" on every single thread. I'm not saying that. There's lots of constructive criticism that is perfectly valid and sparks debate without the endless "What a twat", "He's puke.gif " etc etc that some members feel they need to spread across the board. I personally have had PMs from guys who have stopped bothering to post pictures because they have felt their efforts havn't been valued. And these are the guys that give this board it's life blood.
You yourself posted photos of John Partridge. I can't stand the man. But i wouldnt have dreamt of writing that on your post, because you obviously like him and you made the effort. There are loads of other threads on this forum where you can express whatever you feel about a show or an actor.

I don't post that many pictures these days as anything I see is usually always up here. But when I do, sometimes it's people I like, sometimes people I don't like but think others may like. Personally I take issue at the definition of the sub-forum being there for the purpose of wanking over pictures of celebs. That may be what some people do (fair enough), but others (like me) just enjoy the pics - or not as the case may be. Admiring a young mans body doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be beating away like a mad thing. To me, the likes of Tom Daley, 1D, Justin Bieber (of whom more below), etc are not sexual objects, but they are (at times) beautiful.

Yes it's a ghastly picture, but if the 6th comment about it isn't being mean then I don't know what is. Then again, maybe you're right - that comment wasn't necessarily mean, just plain ignorant.
Using that thread as an example to get back on track, I really don't care a hoot about Justin Bieber - I only really know of his existence through this site, and most certainly wouldn't care tuppence for his music. He may (or may not) be a nasty little thing in real life, I don't know - and neither does anyone else here on the boards, unless we know him personally. I can understand the obsession with him - it doesn't take a lot of thinking through - it's plain ordinary marketing, simple as that. The same trick worked with Boyzone, the same trick is happening with 1D; if you go back far enough the same technique happened with The Monkees! But to describe JB as a 'tone-deaf, pre-pubescent prima donna' is both inaccurate (at certain levels) and simply rude. It is this kind of thing that, frankly, I think the forum could do with less of - and I do apologise for pointing the spotlight at this one example, but it's just one of many, many similar remarks across the 'view' board. So if I look at a thread in view and don't really have anything to say one way or the other, I don't comment. When I do comment, I try to make it positive; rudeness is never becoming of anyone. I like to think us gays are a bit above that kind of thing.

The comments might be being mean and rude but they're are being mean and rude to the person in the picture, who will never see it. And not the poster who made the thread.
If someone wants to say Justin Bieber is a pre-pubescent, primadonna then they should be allowed to do so without people having a pop at them and their personal lives, and the OP having a breakdown and never posting again.

Its not against the rules to dislike and voice your disliking of a celebrity, but it is against the rules to slag off a member of the forum. Which is what most of the backseat mods and keyboard warriors end up doing.
Also the last sentence, aside form being a sweeping generalisation, really doesn't befit the major stereotypes around gays. Bitchy, catty etc

There is a line though.

Someone was banned for a comment in the latest Bieber topic.

There seems to be some people who never post comments in VIEW at all.. except in Bieber topics where they post the same negative shit everytime.

Thats not being a member of VIEW and just not liking a picture. That's trolling.
