I have a 2TB drive that was formatted to NTFS but it will now only re-format to ExFat , my local computer shop cannot fix it or return it to NTFS and it will only format to ExFat, can someone tell me what I can now use this drive for? I know there is a 4gbmaximum with Fat32 but I am unsure what the situation is with this, so can someone help and let me know? thanks in advance bbuk

That's bizarre. I've never heard of a drive that cannot be reformatted. Have you used Disk Management to complete remove all partitions?

Yes I have, but according to Disk Manag. it can stops processing at the RAW stage (if that makes sense to you) and goes no further and when I reformat it I cannot reformat it to NTFS I can only get ExFat

Are there software tools on the manufacturer's website you can download and run to determine the SMART status to see if the drive is knackered?

Previously I've used a bootable CD-ROM containing Ubuntu Linux to wipe hard drives I've messed up. You can just run the setup program and use the Linux disk manager to see if you can format it to FAT32. Then you can use Windows to format it again as NTFS.

I've also used a Linux live CD to wipe all partitions on a hard drive I've buggered up, and the reformatted the raw drive with windows disck management, but since I've had my mac I've found the disk utility has always solved any problems have had formatting hard drives

Buying a mac may be an expensive option biggrin.gif so probably best having a go with a bootable Linux OS
