I remember the days before chat rooms (

) and we had these telephone dating sites. You could post an ad in a gay newspaper designating a voice ad in a certain mailbox at a dating site phone number. Readers reading the ad would call the number and enter your mailbox number, listen to your voice message and then leave a response with callback information if they were interested. Some guys would get scores of messages in their mailboxes, too many to respond to. So they would pick and choose who to call back. Apparently I got a lot of callbacks. They later told me that it was the sound of my voice that they liked.

The downside was that there were no photos to trade (this was before the internet) so you had to screen as much as possible before deciding whether or not to meet the guy.
On one occasion, on actually talking with the guy on the phone, I realized that it was someone who I had once worked with.
Parsy: "Is this Bill M....?"
Bill: ... silence ... then: "Who is this?"
