I finally got to hear the new Jetpacks album today FOR, it's tremendous
good stuff a while after i got the regular edition a frickin' special australian edition came out with 3 extra tracks tacked onto it. grr.
We Cut Corners debut released yesterday. you can listen to it all on their bandcamp: http://www.wecutcorners.net/ i love it, especially Yet, even though it's one of those songs that's a little painful to listen to (boys suck ).

just found these guys. lovely Irish band:
good if you dig stuff like Arcade Fire and My Latest Novel or The Frames even.
You sold me it by mentioning My Latest Novel instantly.
I listened to the new M83 album yesterday at long last. It is very good, definitely too long though. Listening to the whole thing sounds and feels very other worldy.
Here is the lead single from it which you've probably all heard on some tv show or other. This song isn't a clear indication of how varied the album is like.

I keep trying to get in to M83 but it's so hard. I find them very blah.
Yes, blah is now a word.
Lonely Boy by The Black Keys is currently ruling my life. Just in case anyone was wondering.

My obsession with electronic dance/ambient music esque artists continues with a cd today I bought today by Walls, the album is called Coracle.
The second half of this song is PERFECT.
This album is mainly laid back ambient stuff.
I think my taste in music is definitely evolving towards more dance orientated stuff. I still haven't heard the new Justice album

Because I've been so bored tonight, I decided to start compiling my top ten albums of 2011. It isn't going to be an easy feat I tell you. I have a list of 29 or so albums which I've really liked a lot, so I just need to start whittling them down. I should hopefully have a varied and interesting mix when I put up the final list in December.
Rocky, whilst I was going back over these pages I noticed you put up a song by Alex Clare called Up All Night. I remember hearing this song a looooong time ago on the way to the cinema and loving it, but I never did hear who it was. I just happened to have a quick listen then to your post whilst I was browsing through and I instantly remembered The version I heard though was this awesome remix..
I really miss having my Iphone where I could easily just pop onto Itunes and buy remixes like this for my music collection

Nov 24 2011, 21:26
Why, what happened to your Iphone?
I heard an amazingly amazing song called Fuck Music by a band called Chicks on the radio recently. I can't find it on youtube, but it's on their myspace (ooh, retro) and I hope you all go listen to it because it will most likely make your day. It's kind of in the vein of I Touch Myself by Divinyls.
Which, you all know, is a very good thing.
Also heard this, also amazing -

I'd just like to take this opportunity, at the landmark opening of The Alternative Music Thread: Part II, to announce that the list you people have described as "great", "really good", "shamless, contrasting, diverse", "bullshit!" and "a bit iffy" - it's Rocky Raccoon's Top 40 Songs of 2011!
Coming at you in the next few weeks, the definitive list of the musical year that was 2011 promises to be as exciting, divisive, controversial and essential as it was last year. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell the people that don't usually frequent the Alternative Music Thread.
It's coming. And you will be unprepared.

ah FOR, I have a present for you..
I know not many people here like him, but I picked up the new ep from James Blake yesterday. It's very very desolate and cold and lonely, but still lovely none the less.
I think I'll do my top 3 favourite songs of the year very soon closely followed by my top ten albums before you start your list RR.

Alright, here goes, my top three favourite songs of 2011!
(to be fair, deciding this was really hard and I'm sure I'll change my mind tomorrow, but these are the three I've enjoyed the most)
At number 3..
At number 2..
(seriously listen to this with headphones, it's fucking beautiful)
and at number one.. my favourite come back of the year and my favourite song to dance to, ALL THE TIME
I will try to post two a day or something, well more realistically it might be two every few days as I don't get on my laptop much these days.
This was tough to decide, but unfortunately some of these albums just didn't make the cut even though I loved them dearly..
Ryan Adams, PJ Harvey, Iron and Wine, Lykke LI, Strokes, Yuck, Friendly Fires, The Rapture, Explosions In The Sky, The Horrors, Gang Gang Dance,
anywho..
COMING IN AT NUMBER TEN..
ST VINCENT - STRANGE MERCY
A very good, interesting, and messed up album. I ain't no journalist so I can't really explain the many bizarre sounds going on all at once. Just listen and love..
NUMBER NINE..
ACTIVE CHILD - YOU ARE ALL I SEE
Just beautiful, basically
Jonnycondom
Dec 12 2011, 17:25
COMING IN AT NUMBER EIGHT..
WALLS - CORACLE
Really lush, dreamy soundscapes. Perfect for when you're hungover anyway.
Number 7..
METRONOMY - THE ENGLISH RIVIERA
Just really fun, intelligent indie pop music.
Astron

Jesus I don't buy nearly enough albums to make such a list. I mean I've done quite well this year but that's only by my standards.
Jonnycondom
Dec 14 2011, 18:40
The list continues..
AT NUMBER 6..
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB - A DIFFERENT KIND OF FIX
I've never really paid attention to this band until this year. This album is guaranteed to whack a smile on your face. Near perfection indie pop.
NUMBER 5..
RUSTIE - GLASS SWORDS
If you like dance music in any way, you need to hear this. It's like a journey listening to this, a journey of SICK beats.
Just listen to this..
oh man that beat which comes a third of the way through is ridonkilous.
NUMBER 4
ANTLERS - BURST APART
Thankyou Fall OF Reach for introducing me to this quite wonderful album..
NUMBER 3
BON IVER - BON IVER
A pretty much remarkable return for one of the best singer songwriters around today..
top two coming soon!

They've been a sort of hit and miss. While Shuffle and Lights Out, Words Gone are top notch, the rest of the cd is alright....

NUMBER TWO..
SBTRKT - SBTRKT
Probably the obly album which gets near enough to summing up music "now".
It's hard to pick a song to represent the whole album really since they all sound so different, but fuck it, have this one
NUMBER ONE!!!
I thought their first album was just okay. The second was amazing. The third, just a league of its own (although some people still prefer the second) and now they are quite easily one of the best and most interesting bands of our country.
This whole album is full of so many beautiful moments, beautiful weirdness, beautiful lyrics.
just amazing.
It is of course...
WILD BEASTS - SMOTHER
Seriously just listen to this. If you have a heart, it should break right about now..
I hope you enjoyed my countdown.
If any of you want any further reading, this is my favourite music website and their top albums of the year..
her album July Flame (which is the only one i have so far) is so lovely.

Hi music fans, how we all doing?
I'm gonna kick off the year with this stunning song I heard on the radio earlier..
like seriously, how amazing is that? So much atmosphere.
On the album front, The Maccabbes have a new album out on Monday and I have read a lot of positive reviews I'm sure most of you know of them, but if you don't, here is their new song from said album.

I found this in my travels recently, and thought it was quite cool. And probably best described as 'alternative'.
However, I now have a problem... this song has totally reminded me of something else, but I just can't put my finger on what it is.
I remember seeing an animated video for a really cool song and it's totally bugging. The video/song was about a man feeling like a cog in a big machine, but he tries to break out. And I think he experiences what it's like out of the machine and it's not that good and ends up just going back into the machine. And all of the scenes kinda blend together.
And to make things worse, my memory of it is so sketchy that I'm not even sure that it was a person, or even a stick figure. It might have been a robot or something completely random. But man oh man is it really bugging me! I think the song was kinda similar to the one above and possibly similar to Kristian Leontiou's vibe.
I also have a memory of there being other videos/songs by the same person, and there was one/two about someone sailing down a river which was quite possibly a love story.
ARGH! Please someone help me remember.

I honestly don't have a clue Ross, I'm sorry
anyway, thanking you and Memm for contributing to the thread I enjoyed both the songs in completely different ways. Memm's song allowed me to bring out the inner "film soundtrack emo" in me (This is by no means an insult Memm, just sayin that song sounds like it would be perfect in a movie soundtrack is all) What's with the panda dying on the front cover?! Bit harsh.
The picture of the sad robot is a bit glum. I just wanna go hug him. Is the robot standing on the left bullying him? I enjoyed the assorted bleeping noises in the song anyway and computerised voices of course.
FOR, that song is divine! Do they have an album? And for you I have this song which I heard on an episode of "Parenthood" the other day. Really nice vocals, kinda Ryan Adams esque so I thought you may like..
oh yeah, one of my favourite scottish bands The Twilight Sad are back!
Here is their new excellent song..

Jan 7 2012, 15:39
OK, I'm still stumped on the 'cog in a machine' one, but I had a brainwave that led to me finding the 'river' one.
A bit silly really... I mentioned Kristian Leontiou - it's the band that he's now in! One eskimO.
I'll keep thinking about the other one because I'm sure it's connected in some way...

i've been digging through my cstrecords collection looking for stuff to share with my squeeze and stopped and became enthralled with the album that this is from:
they wont be to everyone's taste for sure, but holy crap it's good. if you dig on experimental-ish post rock, you'll love it.
There Will Be Fireworks has also released a new EP and it's an absolute heartbreaker.

They both have a certain, ambience?! about them.
Anyone interested in picking up the album by that band First Aid Kit who everyone is banging on about at the moment? Here is a song from it..
The other day I finally bought one of the older albums by The National "sad songs for dirty lovers". It's very bleak, but brilliant none the less. Here is a favourite of mine from the album..
and whilst I'm at it, I'm assuming you've all heard the brilliant new Radiohead song?

OK Jonny since I said I would.
I'm not listening to a lot of new stuff at the moment tbh, in a sort of new year malaise music-wise. The Trailer Trash Tracys may have been mentioned already, but it's the only new stuff I've heard that's above 'meh'. It sounds a bit like Anna Calvi passed through a Cocteau Twins filter.
