So i'm in the market for a new phone before heading off to uni. I've decided on the Samsung Galaxy Ace as I want something Android but can't justify the £500 price tag of the SII. Anyway it's £150 in Carphone Warehouse subject to buying £15 credit. As I have a contract I am happy with, this is something I would rather forgo paying. Is there any way out of paying for airtime or is this really a mandatory extra?

Have you fulfilled your current contract with your present provider ...if so do they have that phone that you can upgrade to and continue with your contract price . alternatively do you consider £165 a fair price from CPW ..is the phone unlocked or on the network you are with just now so could you not just buy it and use your existing Sim . If you are with Orange have a look at their upgrade prices for this 'phone ..FREE

I think this was covered recently on here. Do a search.

I think the answer was yes you had to buy it.

I don't think you can get the Samsung Galaxy Ace right now? :-

I got a S2 Galaxy just the other day from O2 so they must be selling them safe and soundly in the Uk still.

My contract is a sim only deal so theres nothing to upgrade from. It's a brilliant contract though so im not looking to cancel it. Just want a pay as you go phone to pop my sim into, thus trying to avoid paying for credit I won't be using.

The Galaxy ace has been on sale for months now, its a nice handset so will do me fine for the next year or so. I just find it a bit of a scam forcing customers to add top up when purchasing a new phone.

Aah I see. I guess when "contract" is mentioned most folk will think of the usual monthly contract with a phone attached . I forgot you can get sim only ones .....Is £15 much to worry about if you get the phone you want .
