Full Version: Really Frightening Spanish Hiking Trail

A friend sent me this video (the link) earlier today. I hope this is an okay forum to post it to. smile.gif If wrong, I'm prepared for being beaten with a wet noodle. Nonetheless, there is no amount of money in the world that would get me to do the trail...

Subject: Scary Hiking Trail

Mountain Trail in Spain. Let's hike!

The entrances for this trail are closed but not policed. It was built in
the 1920's for hydro workers. There is no rail but there is a chain to hold
onto but it doesn't hold much weight and several people have fallen to their
deaths. This is an amazing walk! This should have you on the edge of your
seat possibly feeling slightly dizzy. It's 6 minutes long and should be
watched till the very end.

To intensify the experience, click on the full screen button (middle button
that looks like four arrows on the lower right hand side of the screen when
the player comes up). It's enough to make you nauseous especially when you
consider that it was filmed by someone who made the hike carrying a video
camera while he did it.

That didn't help my fear of heights at all.

Fuck me! I was getting palpitations just watching that. I think I'll just keep my feet on the ground ta.

(cool video though smile.gif)
rubyqueen19

PadSpin
I had to stop watching after 90 seconds.

Utterly terrifying.

just shows whats possible when you put your mind to it tho.

Heart palpitations here too sad.gif .

Especially when he gets to the bits where the floor is missing. I assumed he'd turn around but no, he walks across the pipes! cold.gif

I'm not worried about heights at all and after reading the comments first I was expecting something a bit scarier. lol_2.gif

You're so butch! ymca.gif

I just had that awful feeling that it's one of those where if you decided you couldn't face it and had to turn around it would be just as bad going back.

I'd be frozen to the spot cold.gif .

Guy at 2:44 is quite cute though, that might prompt me on lol_2.gif .
Kev
How was he (I'm guessing the person is a he) able to keep his balance through that while carrying a camera? There were parts of that trail when I was thinking "put that fucking camera down and watch where you're going!".

Brrrr!

lol_2.gif I'm really not butch at all, I'd be far more scared if it was a confined space like a small tunnel or underground cave. Wide open, high-up spaces like that don't worry me.

And Kev, I was wondering about that too - perhaps he had a camera strapped to his head, or something?
Ebenezer88
I thought that too (about the camera) because surely if you were walking across those pipes and scary bits you'd HAVE to concentrate on where you were going? cold.gif I mean, there's FUCK ALL beneath you! cold.gif

That shrank my testicles.

wow. so you would happily do something like that? how can you control your nerves with heights but not in confined spaces?

I guess heights = freedom. Like you're on top of the world, or something. Plus, I'm a bit of a thrill-seeker. With deep, dark confined spaces I feel trapped and that's no fun.
BillyBuddSailor
Saw that before. Not a big fan of heights but that video is savage!
Rustythedog
Good god.

How did they build the path? That would've been even worse than wallking it.

Man up, chaps!

I've been up paths with bits a lot worse than that in terms of exposure. And don't forget the camera experience is not what the walker experiences. For instance, a lot of the time it doesn't show the cable which looked to be available all the way along (if in doubt, you should ensure you have three points of contact with the solid stuff).

And I have quite a healthy respect for heights.

The only thing that would have worried me is that the path is so man-made (steps??? - it's more like the M1 than a path smile.gif ) and clearly not in the best state of repair. What would have worried me is the possibility that a whole chunk of walkway could suddenly crumble away. And if I was getting worried about that, would I trust the cable to remain anchored? But again you can't make that judgement unless you are there.

Mind you, this is a tourist route so should be OK. But then it's Spain. Compare and contrast high Alpine routes in Germany or Switzerland where you know the chains you use to swing round outcrops (where you have less footing than the path support in the film) are as well-anchored to mother earth as the ruddy mountain you are going up or down.

BTW mountain walking is the most fabulous exercise and experience ever. Balcony walks like the one shown are magical.

I noticed that, but you see someone in front having to stop to detach and reattach a few times where the cameraman doesn't, so it at least makes it appear as though he's not bothered to.
Parsifal
I presume that he had to come back down the same way again. So that's TWICE!

That was totally nuts!
