Research has shown that those who frequently play computer games are less likely to go to university. The research, which was carried out by Oxford University, involved 17,000 participants born, all of who were born in 1970.

The research also illustrated that reading proved and career success were linked. Results suggested that those 16 year olds that regularly were more likely to be in a management position by the time they reach 33. For women there was a 14% difference between those who read often when 16 and those who did not. As for men there was a 10% difference between regular readers and non-readers.

The effect of playing computer games regular meant 6% less chance of women going to university and 5% less chance of men going to university. Some experts have suggested that it is not computer games itself that does the damage, yet it is the fact that when playing computer games they are not participating in other extra curricular activities that may prove more beneficial.

The research did not take into account what genre of game was played.

Yeah I'm at Uni and I play Videogames.
Stupid article!
mikes
I'm at uni for the second time.. and in a few years will probably be there for a 3rd time...

As with anything like this, it's all bollocks. I always roll my eyes at things like these where it's just a sample. Averages aren't always a true reflection.

What about the fact that videogames help mental cognitive ability and problem solving and hand eye co-ordination..?? hmm hmm.

// have a normal social life

Some gamers are fucking loser freaks.
Astron
But so are some people who don't play video games.

What about the fact they were all born in 1970?

They didn't really have that much choice as teenagers, nothing like we have now.

And it's all a load of bollocks anyway. smile.gif

This.

These people would have been 20 when the SNES came out. How exactly would video games have affected these people going to uni, when they wouldn't have been exposed to the renaissance of gaming until 4 years after leaving secondary school?

Video games are much more common now and I know very few people who didn't go to uni. Amongst my friends I'm the only person who didn't go but we all played games back then and still do now. And it wasn't video games making me withdrawn or melting my brain that discouraged me from going either.

Stupid report is stupid, on the same level as the Alan Titchmarsh lynching debate about violent video games on his TV show.

You've just deleted my early gaming life in that sentence. Never heard of BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Amiga 500/1200, Atari ST, Commodore VIC-20, Commodore 64, IBM-PC, Sinclair ZX-80 etc etc. ????

ALL totally brilliant gaming machines and streets ahead of the likes of the consoles that were out then. I was playing PC games in high definition before Sony even brought out the PS1. wink.gif

*IBM-PC means the likes of DOS-based games.

Everyone knows video games are for stupid people.

Pleeease, as fond as I am of the golden age, playing Fantasy World Dizzy on the ZX bleh.gif it wasn't until the likes of Super Mario that console gaming hit the mainstream and became the embodiment of all that is evil and began poisoning society.
