Hey guys
Is anyone else rather annoyed about the amount of leeching that goes on here? For instance, topics get thousands of views but only a couple of comments. The leeching at this board is higher than anyone else I have visited. Image hosts struggle with the high bandwidth usage too just to feed these leechers.
Something in my opinion should be done about this. Perhaps delete those accounts where people have registered but never posted a comment?
Anyone else think this is an issue or is it just me?

If it doesn't seem to bother the person who runs this board why is this an issue for you?
Half of the people who visit the View forum only come here to wank, they're not wanting a conversation.

Its an issue for me because I simply dont want to post images if thousands of people are going to view them but not even bother to say thank you.
It SHOULD be an issue for the person who runs the board and would be interested to hear his opinions on this.

Do you really want to see 11098 comments about a deleted scene of a movie that will undoubtedly be a variation of 'Hot stuff'
What difference does it make if people comment or not?

What about charity work?
Erm no.
This is a picture sharing site, and always has been. That's sharing. Not giving something and expecting something in return. In fact the main picture forum is called "View", not "Discuss the pictures or get out".
We're very grateful for every picture posted on here, but we're not going to force members to comment if they don't want to, or penalise them for viewing only.
We advise picture posters to use specific image hosts that don't have bandwidth limits (or at least very high ones) as we're well aware of the traffic we generate. So I fail to see the "leeching" being a problem.
Also, this isn't an mp3 site, so leeching isn't really an appropriate term anyway.
Please don't be outraged on our behalf.

Thanks for your reply. If your happy with that then thats fine and I respect that. I just think you would have more members contributing if leeching was less a problem.

I'm kinda confused, even if the thread had 29999 views and 29999 replies, there would still be the same amount of bandwidth used? What would saying thank you do to contribute to reducing bandwidth use?

Wouldn't it increase bandwidth?
I'm just going by all the general chat threads getting closed after like 30 pages, because it takes up forum bandwidth.

Technically yes it would, especially after posting the thankyou, the thread would reload then reload the picture (although the cache would potentially limit this contributor)
Considering the kind of replies you get in view, I'd be grateful to not receive lots of replies

If it's so arduous then why bother at all? Post your pics in your living room and you can thank yourself every time and then you can get the validation you seek. Alternatively, you could assume that people haven't posted a reply because they love your pictures (and by extension you) so much that they're otherwise busy.
...
I mean they're wanking.
Also, the "Discuss the pictures or get out" board sounds like a much better name but only in acronym: DTPOGO (pronounced D T POGO). Much better. "View" is just so obvious...

I'm also confused.
If you look at the front page, you'd notice as with most public boards the amount of guests far outnumbers the amount of registered users - posters or not - the vast majority of the bandwidth goes on non-registered users, you can't ban those without making it private board, then drops views and advertising revenue which is what keeps this board alive.
Also, as image bandwidth is the poster's issue not the board's issue - as the board doesn't host the images - then you can personally do something about it, that is not post the pictures if you feel that strongly about it.
These boards are public, these boards are highly successful, the amount of active posters is a drop in the ocean of amount of people who visit this board daily.
Therefore the only sure fire way of removing "leeching" as you call it, is to make the boards entirely private. There's enough of those types of boards on the internet already.
I think the OP meant 'leeching' as in 'viewing pictures without giving anything (a comment) in return' as opposed to 'leeching' in a sense of using someone else's bandwidth.
In principle, I agree that replies to a post in View feel like a better 'reward' for the poster than a high view count. I have on occasion complained about posts with hundreds or even thousands of views, with no or hardly any comments.
However, I don't think making comments mandatory is a good solution even if it were possible. Members should reply to a post because they want to, not because they have to.

I think the OP meant 'leeching' as in 'viewing pictures without giving anything (a comment) in return' as opposed to 'leeching' in a sense of using someone else's bandwidth.
But it's part of the same issue. If the vast majority of people viewing aren't registered members then they aren't actually in a position to post comments, the only way around that is only making posts/fora viewable by registered members. The reason to bring this up? Because his idea of banning accounts of people who don't post is moot on a public forum where the vast majority (look at the figures below) of people aren't registered at all.
The OP did specifically bring up image bandwidth in his post, however you're right his larger point was about lack of comments, I repeated it as 90+% of the bandwidth is provided by your users not "you" the boad, the issue at least of bandwidth is a personal one... the OP seemed to be asking what the management felt about that along with the comment issue, but as your bandwidth costs are comparatively small, it pays to keep the boards public, to entice more views, more advertising revenue and more affiliate conversions, part and parcel of that is a lower comment to view ratio!
870 users active in the last 15 minutes, 766 of whom were guests. That sort of viewing is what makes FMF awesome. Low comments to views should therefore be expected.

Just to add that I agree with x2k completely.
Personally, I'm not fussed whether people post 'thanks' or not. It's not an ego trip.. I post pics to share them with others not because I need appreciation.
Get a dog.
PLUS.. we struggle enough with server drain already without every tom dick and harry posting "thanks" every 3 seconds.
