I wish Todd Carney well. After reading his history of boorish, immature, and downright dangerous behavior due to his alcoholism, it does give me pause to feel sorry for the guy. But alcoholism is an illness, and I hope that Todd Carney conquers it. To have stardom and adulation thrust upon you at an early age is incredibly difficult, unless you have the maturity to handle it and people around you who have your best interests at heart. It sounds as if he did not have these! Godspeed to him. He may be down now. I hope that he has hit rock bottom. Let's hope that he can pick himself up!

As for Anthony Watts, I have nothing but disgust for any man who physically abuses his spouse, partner, lover, or any other human being. I hope that they throw the book at him!

Amazing pics of Dugan Vindiezel and thanks WranglerMan for the Carney pics. The weirdest thing about the whole saga was that we discover Carney has been living alone. Talk about recipe for disaster. It's easy to forget that a lot of NRL players have just emerged from their teens and are still very immature and inexperienced at life. Combine this with sycophantic media whores, big bucks, gym fuelled testosterone, gold digging bimbos and disproportionate egos (not to mention all the drugs), then it is inevitable that scandal will follow scandal.

Todd's had depression for years but he never talks about it no one is doing anything about that. He asked for help and everyone turned the other way and said get over it yourself basically. You can't get over depression by your self it's a recipe for destruction aka what's he's been doing.

Hmm.

There's degrees in everything. A lot of commentators are still treating him as if he was still in his Brendan Fevola/Ben Cousins/Anthony Watts/aka, "I'm a Walking Negative Headline" days, just like he was back in Canberra (police chase anyone?). Sure, Watts is a jerk and he should have his contract torn up pretty quickly -- but at the moment, Carney's a danger to nobody but himself.

But what to do? Fire him, de-register him, and send him to spend a year in Atherton? They already did that, and here we are. Keep doing it until it works? How many second chances are you supposed to give somebody?

I'm also not sure about the article's undertone that young men are, by default, stupid. How many hundreds of people in the first grades (of rugby, soccer, AFL, etc etc etc) *don't* fly off the rails in spectacular fashion? How many times does that *not* happen? There are hundreds of players who don't even dip their toes into scandal, but nobody pays attention to them.

So how do you fix Carney? Million dollar question. Maybe, maybe at the end of the day, a life of professional sport just isn't right for him. *shrug*

Personally I think the top brass at the NRL love all the publicity the dramas bring to the game. I heard yet another journo refer to the problems at the Roosters as 'atrocities' and found myself wishing for a revolver to enact a real one upon loose lipped morons in the press. Eric Grothe has a word or three to say about the gutter press on the Footy Social site that is apt. God only knows what Roy and HG would have made of all these silly episodes.
