The CGI looks good some places, then god awful in others.

Reynolds and Lively are both competing for a Razzie it seems.

Loving the scenes on Oa

I'm the same. Probably still will though.

It looks boring and cheesy to be honest.

Same. It looks like it has the potential to be awful, or surprisingly decent.

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE!?!

Here's the official trailer through Apple.

Green Lantern
Jonnycondom
I'm a bit meh with it too. I never read the comic, or actually have any Green Lantern knowledge whatsoever so I can't really be bias.

Plus Ryan Reynolds, as pretty as he is the boy can't act for shit. Even in the trailer during the whole "I'm not fearless" scene, it's still dodgy acting.
Psychosyndrom
Seems to be being recieved in the same way as here everywhere. Namely, no one quite knows what to make of it.

Comic fans are generally disgusted by the casting of Reynolds and Lively, but the villains are being praised.

It's attached to Harry Potter, so it looks like they are going the kids/family route.

In general, I am so eye rolling the fuck out of people who are bitching about it rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

What do people expect?? Sometimes, somethings aren't exactly right or they look a bit shit or whatever.. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy them for what they are. Lighten up. It's a film. The comics and awesome animated feature are still there... in fact, the film will probably boost sales of the comic and tpbs so that means more GL stuff, and more money for the graphic novel and comic industry for new and other projects...

I think in general people expect for them not to ruin their comic franchises with horrible concepts or terrible acting. DC movies have a weird history in terms of translating to film. it takes them AGES to finally get the characters you would think should be great in movies actually on a screen for us to watch. Sometimes it works with the recent Batman movies, and sometimes it is a horrible massive wtf were they thinking failure like Jonah Hex, Catwoman.

Green lantern has been in development a LONG time, and when the rumors first came out that they wanted it to be some wacky Jack black comedy fans groaned and saw another catwoman approaching. But then we hear Ryan reynolds and a whole new approach and people are cautiously optimistic. I like green lantern as a character, althought Hal isnt my fav GL, and this COULD be an awesome movie if done right. People want it to be good, but if you handicap the movie right from the start with terrible acting and cheesiness it is not going to help other franchises.

DC comics has their very own movie House under the same company umbrella but it just seems so difficult for them to get their movies out and for them to be great. Another big failure will just harm future non Batman movies getting made and fans dont want that.

hmm, well, I don't get how something can be ruined if that medium still exists. Generally, films exist out of canon, and therefore can be considered separate entities.

Yeah, the acting might look hammy but fuck the acting. I want battles and the Green Lantern corps at war. We don't often get a massive team of super heroes, it's usually about the singular character, whereas, even though this focuses on Hal, the scope is greater than that. I dunno. I guess I'm just excited about it and can separate the comic book medium from a film translation.

Everyone who loves GL wants battles and the GL corps warring etc. That isnt what people are talking about. The movie MIGHT actually be good i am not saying it wont be. And of course the comic movies are never exact replicas of the comics but they can still be good movies. Every comic fan that loved Iron Man, or Dark Knight or Spiderman also was able to seperate the medium from a film translation. Because none of those were directly translated either and thats fine.

Anyway Killowog looks great, hope he calls Hal a poozer!
Tiuri
I like the trailer and to me Hal has always been THE Green Lantern thumbsup.gif Some of the CGI seems a bit over the top, but it's only a trailer. I look forward to this smile.gif
Astron
I think it looks shit.
I don't know that much about Green Lantern but I think Reynold would fit the part so much better if they would have taken the current GL Kyle Rayner, his storylines (at least when I read them a while back) where much funnier and had a large Soap part to them as well so would go perfectly with the theme they chose for this.
When Hal was GL things were all a bit more serious.
Also fans of Kyle are a whole new generation and would probably be more acceptance of nonsense like this.
Though I'm not, you'd think they learned from F4.
Jonnycondom
There's a new trailer out and it actually looks really damn good..

Tiuri
I've always loved Green Lantern (well, the Hal Jordan incarnation) and this looks amazing biggrin.gif
Nexus
Hal Jordan kicks cats. Boo! bleh.gif
MOOO
How many super heroe movies this year?

I'll still go watch this though
daikaioshin
still think the suit looks a bit tacky... but hmm... not sure about this one...
Astron
I see they toned down the sillyness (or at least left it out of the trailer)
Story seemes to be as generic as it gets though.
Of course the newbie will be able to defeat a villain a whole army of far more experienced and powerfull people can't handle. Cliche, cliche, cliche. rolleyes.gif
Dunno can't bring myself to get excited about this and I actually love Super Hero Movies.
Ryans ass in that costume is devine though. drool.gif

Astron, remember that they are making a film of the late 1950's reboot of Green Lantern:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Lantern...ver_Age_revival

QUOTE
In the late 1950s, DC Comics successfully revived superheroes, ushering in what became known as the Silver Age of comic books. Rather than bringing back the same Golden Age heroes — as Atlas Comics, the 1950s precursor of Marvel Comics, unsuccessfully attempted — DC re-imagined them as new characters for the modern age. Following the successful revival of the Flash in Showcase #4 (Oct. 1956), a new Green Lantern was introduced in Showcase #22 (September–October 1959).

This Green Lantern was Hal Jordan, a test pilot who was given a power ring by a dying alien, Abin Sur, and who became a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an interstellar organization of police overseen by the Guardians of the Universe. The Corps' rings were powerless against anything colored yellow, due to an inherent impurity in the ring. Jordan's creation was motivated by a desire to make him more of a science fiction hero, editor Julius Schwartz having been a longtime fan of that genre and literary agent who saw pop-culture tastes turning in that direction.

The Silver Age Green Lantern was unique in several ways. He was the first DC superhero with a family. The Silver Age Green Lantern had a young Inuit assistant, an aerospace mechanic nicknamed Pieface (Thomas Kalmaku), who chronicled his adventures. Written by John Broome and drawn by Gil Kane, these stories have been reprinted in deluxe hardback editions.

Artist Gil Kane saw Jordan as a handsome high society playboy, similar to some of the movie characters played by Paul Newman, and as a result Newman became the "unknowing model" for the superhero. Kane "drew his hero as if he were drawing Paul Newman. Especially in Green Lantern's earliest adventures, the resemblance is unmistakable."

This Green Lantern was a founding member of the Justice League of America and starred in his own title as well; in issue #40 (Oct. 1965), he met his Golden Age predecessor, who was established to live on the parallel world of Earth-Two, separate from Jordan's Earth-One. The two Lanterns struck up a close friendship and have periodically come to each other's aid. Hal Jordan's Green Lantern also became close friends with Barry Allen, and the two heroes appeared frequently in each other's comics to team up.

As such, what is a cliche nowadays, wasn't so much of one then, and if they are going to re-imagine the re-imagination, they have to stay true to the core of the story.

I've heard that this is to be the first in a trilogy of films covering that @silver Age' cycle with Thaal Sinestro being his Green Lantern mentor in the first film and becoming his Arch Nemesis in the later movies (as he does in the comics).
Astron
Well it is a cliche today and it's frequently used so obviously Hollywood doesn't care either way.
Finnbar
After the second trailer I'm a bit more relieved. Still wish it was the John Stewart era though.
Mister R
New trailer.

These trailers are reminding me how much sci-fi/fantasy guff there is in The Green Lantern and that's putting me off. But Jesus the effects budget on this is big...

Tiuri
Love the trailer biggrin.gif

Well, I've just come home from the cinem after watching this.

Hmmm, it was OK, I guess. Not exactly a raving endorsement, but even though I liked and enjoyed it, it felt flat. We all know who's going to win in the end with this type of superhero movies, but this one was too straight-forward. It all seemed just a touch too easy. Having read the comics, I expected a certain someone to be a villain as well, but this was not the case in the movie, which made for a bit of a disappointing ending.
Nexus
I went to watch it last Thursday and I thought it was good. Not great, but good.
My only real complaints are that it felt a bit slow at first. Mostly because it focussed too much on the mundane earthly stuff. I wanted more space opera and less soap opera.
That and Hal Jordan didn't really feel like the Hal Jordan from the comics to me. Mind you, I've only been following Green Lantern since the you-know-who corps war. Ryan Reynolds just seemed too... I don't know the right word. Goofy? But I figure that's just how Ryan Reynolds is.

And Tiuri, it seemed pretty clear from the post-credits clip that they were setting that up for a sequel. Though if that's going to happen remains to be seen.

Lastly, nice touch of including Amanda Waller. Angella Basset did a good enough job, but to me Pam Grier is the one and only Amanda Waller (see Smallville).
Astron
Watched this now.
Maybe it was because I heard only bad stuff about it and therefore my expectations were low but I actually thought it was alright.
Not amazing but I've seen far worse Super Hero flicks (looking at you Watchmen now and forever and first Hulk).
The film is totally cliche ridden and overall rather shallow but then again so are many comics and in that regard it stays true to the formula.
It made a nice change to get something more light hearted than the usual "I'm so terribly burdened and fucked up because of my powers" depri approach to comic converts.
I liked Ryan a lot in it though as Nexus said he doesn't resemble Hal Jordan much (or Kyle for that matters) but I never read many Hal-GL comics so might be wrong.
The only really bad thing was his animated mask but given they take the piss out of it in the movie themselves it kind a counter balance it.

Oh dear. shaky.gif
We're gonna have words again now, as I stand up for the Watchmen movie.
But seriously, I loved Watchmen (both comics and movie), but you're free to dislike it. lol_2.gif
Astron
My best mate loved it too (but then again he would have to cause he bought it blindly).
I just fell asleep during it many times always surprised that when I woke up again the film was still going.
Jonnycondom
I watched this on the plane home from America last year. Absolutely fucking awful. Easily one of the worst superhero films I've ever watched, alongside Catwoman.
Astron
I think Watchmen is only really for fans of the comics anyway Jonny.

I think he might mean Green Lantern.

I think you misunderstand Astron's "amazing" sense of humour, Nexus lol_2.gif
guylikeu
Green Lantern was alright, but for the budget it should have been much better. It's always surprises me to think that the cast and crew must know they are making something deeply mediocre and carry on anyway.

Whoever said Hulk was a bad movie need to re- xxxxuate it - I'll defend both Hulk movies against all critics! The last 15-20 mins are unnecessary, but other than that it's a brilliant drama about a father and son (but with added gamma-charged superpowers)

EDIT: why can't I type e v a l u a t e without it turning into xxx?? It's not a swear word and even if it were, swearing is allowed on here?

@GLY
Now I'm usually the last man standing defending movies everyone else things are total shite, so when I say a movie is bad you can be assured it's super bad.
I really wanted to like the first Hulk but it just was so so dull. The only highlight (a big one though I give you that) was Eric Bana getting naked.
Now the second one was superb though. I would even say the best out of all the "leading up to Avengers" movies.
guylikeu
Completely agree about 2nd Hulk film, it was such a great comic book film and the best Avengers film so far. Gutted Edward has been replaced.

Anyway, I didn't like Hulk the first time I viewed it. At All. But I've watched it many times since then, and each time I've liked it more and more. Ultimately it fails to do what it should have done, IE start a franchise and deliver a good mix of character and action. But If you watch it from what Ang Lee was trying to do, it totally works. He wanted to make a human drama where a man who suppresses all the rage and anxiety over his father so deep inside that it literally comes out as the Hulk. The editing is also so unique, especially when the camera pulls out and you see the different comic book frames. Love it.
Astron
Fair enough I might watch it again if I come across it on telly or something. If only to see Eric's bum again. wink.gif
guylikeu
Yay! And that is the definite highlight of the film. More of these Marvel films should show the hero's bum biggrin.gif
Astron
