Aliens

That's more of an action film. The first film, "Alien", was more horror.

See No Evil starring Kane.

It's probably not that scary for most but just the fact that Kane plays the main character makes it a creepy film!

The bit where the girl gets eaten by the dogs is fucking GROSSSSSSSS
AlexKidd
Definately Tobe Hooper's 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre'.
Romero's 'Night of Living Dead' (the sequels are just as brilliant but not as scary).
The original version of 'The Haunting' with Deborah Kerr is pretty creepy on a psychological level.
Hitchcock's 'Psycho'.
'Audition' by Miike Takashi, if you wanted a slow-burner.
'The Wicker Man' (the original, obviously).
Cronenberg's version of 'The Fly'.
boogie_artist
I'd recommend -
Halloween (78 version just a superb piece of terrifying cinema).
Halloween H20 is a good follow up and arguably the best sequel.
Trick R Treat is another Halloween-themed film in style of Creepshow.
The Fog
Black Christmas (the 74 version is very creepy)
American Werewolf in London just a classic.
Couple of Dario Argento's Suspiria and Tenabrae are great too.
I saw Dead Snow recently and that was quite good too.
flip
Why haven't you watched the Scream trilogy yet?
They're amazing!

Deborah Kerr is in The Innocents. It's Claire Bloom and Julie Harris who are the female leads in The Haunting.
Both films are very good (if you don't mind atmosphere rather than shocks).
smile.gif

A lot of the horror films I like are pretty obscure but I'd give a shout to the original Halloween and Black Christmas. The Exorcist is also one of my faves but many young uns don't seem to think much about it!
I was also pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Jeepers Creepers a few years ago. Oh and the first Candyman.
boogie_artist
@Sam Hain
Good shout for Candyman, also Hellraiser is decent too.

The bit with the wire! shaky.gif me no likey. Creepy and disturbing film though.

The Fog

Couple of Dario Argento's Suspiria and Tenabrae are great too.

Good shout x 2

Though I've always felt the ending of the Fog was a bit, well, rubbish. It just didn't sit well with the unseen dread etc of the remainder of the film.

QUOTE(Sam Hain @ Sep 22 2010, 16:02) *

Candyman.

I've always thought that film was criminally underrated. For once a decent Philip Glass score, brilliantly shot, Virginia Madsen was great, and I love how it does, to an extent, leave things open to interpretation...[SPOILER]If you start with the assumption that her investigation/thesis sent her a bit psychotic (as the doctors etc insisted) then there's no concrete proof that the Candyman was real; at all key moments Helen blacks out and/or has convenient weapons to hand. Even in the doctor's office it's conceivable she wasn't correctly restrained (otherwise why would he undo her restraints after doing in the doctor?)[SPOILER]

Anyways. Love a bit of horror. Thought Drag Me to Hell was fun but not scary. Dead of Night is quite a classic, though it's fairly dated by modern standards. Halloween 3 is quite good, and horrific by turns, though totally not a 'Halloween' series film. I love old schlocky things like Tourist Trap, or The Car - they're a bit more ridiculous than scary though.

Don't waste your time on The Last Exorcism. It's crap!

The first, third and seventh Nightmare films are the best. Ignore the remake (in fact ignore all horror film remakes as they can't match the original classics).

Although it might not scare you the first Saw movie is really good with a great twist (the rest are crap).

Cabin Fever is worth a watch and I'd also recommend My Little Eye.

All the ones mentioned on here, plus Quarantine and Ginger Snaps.

it's about this single woman living with her kids who's like, haunted/raped by a ghost and no one will believe her etc...

some of the graphics are sooooo naff but it's an AWESOME MOOOOOOOOVIE especially for the price, found it in a bargain bin for like 3 quid thumbsup.gif !!!

Do you mean the crappy remake which is actually getting really good reviews?

A remake doesn't always mean crap, I felt 'Let the right one in' was good but really overrated and is not really horror.

Try the french film 'Inside' it is brilliant.

Ah yes, cheers Sam, I was getting my wires muddled there. I was thinking of The Haunting, but The Innocents is very good too.

The Exorcist is good, but has been unfortunately diluted by the countless parodies it inspired.

Guys, guys, guys, How can any of your forget the classic 'Evil Dead' A corker. As long as you make allowances for the fact it's about forty years old. Still gives me the willies. (and at my age I'll take a willy wherever I can get it)
boogie_artist
Francis Ford Coppola's version of Bram Stoker's Dracula is great as well if you like gothic horror, also Sleepy Hollow.
Rocky Raccoon
Has anyone seen Martyrs?

It's a newish (2008?) French film and it's meant to be fucking nuts.

Yup I have and it certainly is! It's a very hard watch, but it's actually impossible to take your eyes away.

Anybody seen A Serbian movie yet?
BillyBuddSailor
Paranormal Activity, it fucked my mind for days.... couldn't sleep looking at the open door the night I saw it

Agreed on The Last Exorcism, such a pile of crap!
Rocky Raccoon
I want to see it. They're doing a glossyHollywoodremake, too. Possibly with Kirsten 'Bella Swan' Stewart attached.

D'you mean A Serbian Movie or a serbian movie?

The former. The one which is meant to be completely fucked up anyway (and possibly features a man shagging a baby)
Rocky Raccoon
We can watch it together so. On our date.

I really get off on torture porn, so the chances of you being in my pants by the end of the first night are very high.
Rocky Raccoon
Ok, so I just looked A Serbian Film up on wikipedia and read the full plot synoposis and it sounds terrible! It was actually fucking hard to read! Look it up now, just to appall yourself.

Paranormal Activity was as bad as The Last Exorcism. All these so-called "real" horror films (Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity, The Last Exorcism) are all a pile of crap. At the end of each of these movies my reaction was "Was that it?" Overhyped rubbish!

I saw the trailer for Let Me In and it's identical to Let The Right One In (except the cast). The script's identical (as it's written by the original screenwriter) and it looks as if it's been shot in the same location. I don't care how good the reviews are I don't want to watch a duplicate movie.

I have done this very thing and I just couldn't help but laugh out loud at how completely ridiculous it sounds. The erect penis going into the eyesocket sounds hot.
Rocky Raccoon
Yeah, that part was quite funny actually. Like that was the only way he could kill him.

The rest though - fuck! I hate rape in horror films anywway, but this is just talking the fucking proverbial.
guylikeu
I love horror films, nothing like a cheap scare to get your adrenaline flowing. Peronally, I'm a sucker for 90's slasher films Like Scream, I know what you did last Summer, Urban Legend, Cherry Falls, My Little Eye, plus respective sequels.

All of my other faves have already been mentioned. Whilst not a horror film, one of my most "scary" films is Silence Of The Lambs. It really gets in your head and still scares me now
BillyBuddSailor
Roll on the classics!
Rocky Raccoon
Me and my sister tried watching Silence of the Lambs when I was around 11, but had to stop once Buffalo Bill got that woman into the back of his van and checked her measurements.

I'm actually looking forward to Scream 4 ( or Scre4m.... unsure.gif ). It's out in April, isn't it?
alansmith:)
i'd suggest beginning your education into the world of 'horror movies' with the original 'slasher', 'Psycho' by Hitchcock.

I wouldn't say any horror films are too scary, however 'Dead Silence' was tragic yet it managed to scare me and my friends, haha.

The Scream Trilogy are amazing, but maybe not scary, the first one's rather and the second's suspenseful.

I like the old Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th, but as proven throughout film history, their sequels kind of suck.

I'm not sure, but I too am looking forward to it. Hopefully Sharon Osbourne has been keeping an eye on it, because "Let Me Hear You Scream" is BEGGING to be the song over the credits.

As for my recommendations: I echo those who say the original Halloween. I think true horror is somewhat out of fashion, but I'd also suggest Nosferatu. It's not scary, yet it can still make your skin crawl. And for modern stuff, Let the Right One In is spectacular.
madpower
'Let Me In' whilst it does look very similar to 'Let the right one in' it is meant to have a completely different feel, I never really understand why people write off a film just because it is 'cool' to like the original. The good reviews have even come from people who were dead against the remake because they claim the original was almost perfect.

The same thing happened with Quarantine, loads of people say it is crap, but it is almost identical to Rec, I enjoy both, yes Rec is better, but Quarantine is a very good remake.

As for Martyrs I was little disappointed in that, the opening 30mins or so were brilliant but then I just became a little bored, and the end.... disappointing.

Nosferatu was actually terrifying! His face just staring at her, it was so freaky, and it's silent so it's more eerie.

Can't wait for Scream 4, the lovely Adam Brody is in it wub.gif

I actually think the Elm Street sequels are quite good. Dream Warriors, for me, is better than the original. New Nightmare is right up there, a very clever film and so far ahead of it's time in terms of self-awareness and irony. Even Freddy's Dead (the series lowpoint) has the odd moment
Sam Hain
Se7en is not a horror film as such but it is disturbing. I actually prefer films that "creep me out" so I like something like Carnival of Souls or The Baby. Not horror films really...more weird.

^^ Eraserhead. (The film, not Sam)

Yes! Great film... a nightmare on celluloid!
Jonnycondom
I was actually talking about A Serbian Movie with one of my friends at work today, and then someone else overheard and then this proceeded to me telling about 6 people in the lab. I actually blurted out "and erm...theres a scene where a guy shags a newborn baby". It was literally like something out of an awkward english comedy show because of the horrible silence afterwards. And now everyone at work thinks I'm a freak.

Marvellous.

I liked Dream Warriors but it isn't near the original.
Plus, [SPOILER] Nancy dies sad.gif

They were just getting worse and worse, Wes Craven saved the franchise with New Nightmare,
in my opinion.

a boy in my film class at college was on about that film the other day for no apparent reason, the rest of us were in shock to what he had just said.
