Something arose on Twitter today when someone tweeted about objections to a .GAY Domain being created . This was the first I'd heard about it and the Tweeter posted a link suggesting that there were various objections to its creation and mostly I believe because it was "gay" .
I asked why such a domain name was needed and what was wrong with the .COM and .CO.UK and other Countries ones . I was surprised to find out just how many different Domains there were . The reply I got when I asked why a .GAY one was needed was "Choice" but I'm still confused as to why it IS needed . There isn't a .STRAIGHT one . Maybe it's a marketing strategy

Anyone got any thoughts .

When you've been around as long as you (or I wink.gif) have, hasn't it occurred that often people do, buy, or create something because they can?? So yeah, it probably is a marketing strategy - pink £/€/$ and all, but someone will really be doing it for the money. wink.gif

I guess it could come in handy for, well, lot of things, really. Could be an international GAY web portal, or for various pride/LGBT/non-LGBT community sites/AIDS-HIV support. And the usual sort of pubs/clubs/sex shops/porn/dating/sex-sites.

The possibilities are endless. wink.gif So the objections are mainly geared towards a '.gay' domain, as opposed to anything?? unsure.gif

I had read that .gay was one of the proposed extensions, but it was just part of a long, long list (actually, not as long a list as I expected; other contenders were .melbourne, .sydney, and .hsbc, barclays etc).

Depends what you think, really. But I think being gay's something to be proud of. smile.gif

Not entirely in a gay pride sort of way, but just something to be proud of being - because it's part of what you are. smile.gif

You mean like being proud of being left-handed?

I don't get this being proud of " being gay" or " being Scottish" . I'm both but it's just something that happened and I had nothing to do with making it happen.

Proud of being gay? Nope. Proud of what some gay people are doing today or have done in history? Yup.

People really don't get why "proud" is used. It's not about being proud per se, it's about being unashamed, and the opposite to shame is pride. That's why we use pride whether we're proud or not.

Well no I didn't make it up. The point of gay pride back in the days of yore was for gays to publicly say "we're not ashamed". The word "pride" is just a quick way of saying it.

Are you being discriminated against, or would have in the past, for driving it?

We don't discriminate against Mondeo drivers, we pity them. bleh.gif

As for a .gay domain - I don't really see a need for it, there again I don't really see anything wrong with it either.

Perhaps I should register .ambivalent lol_2.gif

Whats discrimination got to do with a .gay
domain creation. Is that your argument for having it ??

Two different questions here. On the .gay thing, let them create it. I hope it dies from indifference, but if people are tacky enough then so be it.

On the pride thing, there is a lot of difference between proud and unashamed. I am utterly unashamed about the fact that I like cock. It is not a source of pride though because it represents no choice on my part and has never required any effort or achievement. I have fingernails as well, should I organise a march for that?

On the achievements of people through history, it's utterly irrelevant. Should I take pride in everything achieved by people with brown hair, or those with size twelve feet?

So the women and men in the 20th Century and before who stood up against gay discrimination and put their lives and reputations on the line don't deserve my "pride" in their achievements? If having "brown hair" (like i've got) had carried thousands of years of hate and discrimination and people had died to show that people with brown hair were human beings too, then likewise.

They deserve your thanks and celebration, certainly. I think we've stretched the word "pride" to cover a lot of events it shouldn't, in this case, relating it, as sanity put it, with being unashamed.

Don't mean to put any words in your mouth, sanity, and I'm sure you'll defend yourself better than I can, but I hate to see you standing alone all the time. Especially when you've said something perfectly sensible.
