I went to one of the Ceremony Rehearsals during the week before and I can honestly say it was the most spectacular thing I've seen in my life. I was therefore really disappointed by how it cam across on TV. It was lacking all the scale, all the bombast and all the spectacle that the actual event had. Was a real shame I thought.
Fortunately at the rehearsal I also didn't have to sit through friggin' Hey Jude.
To be fair that usually applies to pretty much every theatrical performance, it always loses something if you're not actually watching it live.
Pretty much what I was going to say. Could apply to any concert, too.

I saw a recording of McCartney's gig from about three years ago which was for the opening of the Citi Fields stadium in New York and it was by far the best gig I've seen on tv which is ironic given his recent performances! The energy of the show really came across and that's what's often missing.
As for his Olympics gig I thought it was ok given the technical problems he had at the start but I'm not a fan of Hey Jude generally. BTW I also think he's a true professional as he hasn't said a word about the problems he had, nor tried to defend himself and I don't think others would've stayed quiet.
Overall, the more I think of the whole opening ceremony and the more I see of it, the more I think it was truly spectacular!
