The Release Preview of Microsoft's next operating sysem is roughly a week away. Normally, I'd be all over this like a rash but I'm exceedingly happy with Windows 7 and don't feel I can be arsed messing up my HDD. (I could put in an alternative HDD, I suppose.)

I was just wondering whether anyone has been using the Consumer Preview that was released a while back and your thoughts.

Haven't used it but spoken to people who have and read loads of things about it. I can guarantee that the enforced metro-ish replacement pop-up thing instead of the Start menu would/will drive me crazy. I sincerely hope they make it optional come the final release.

The Windows 8 Release Preview is out now.

Decided I'm going to swap HDDs and give it a whirl.

Crikey. I'm really impressed. The computer starts up and shuts down faster than ever before. Can't say I really have any use for the Metro interface at this point but the desktop is only a click away and you can still pin your programs to the task bar so you don't have to keep flicking to the Metro Start.
