Italian commercial (Berlusconi) TV news just said the UK were thinking about withdrawing those two coins...

BUT, having skimmed the BBC webiste previously, I was a wee bit surprised. unsure.gif

So, I went back to the BBC site and searched "abolition coins" and an article came up which showed that 25% of Brits would happily see the back of them...but the article was posted in 2004! puppyeyes.gif

Finally, I found the Italian news item on its website where the figure of 25% was repeated...

So, fellow Brits, have, for some reason, the Italian reporters dug up this old survey from 8 years ago or is there a new campaign to get rid of coppers (the coins, not police officers!)...the suspence is killing me!

Two new cheaper to produce 1p and 2p coins have been introduced this year, given that the withdrawal has to be at least 5 years hence, if then.

Must admit that more people are 'losing' pennies, have picked a few up on the streets recently.

I don't know how you Brits manage with all those coins. I came back from London with a tone of lose change because I couldn't figure them out and I'd pay everything with bank notes... . £1 was easy, smallish and heavy, and the pentagon one. The rest was a chore. Euros are so easy biggrin.gif

Naturally they are, and of course if (prepares to be shot at from all and sundry) the UK should be a member of the single currency, and should have been from the start.

I read recently that Canada will eliminate the 1 cent coin. The smallest coin will then be 5 cents.
No such talk in the US.

Here's an article that suggests otherwise and also possibly the start of the Italian speculation:

Whats so difficult about UK coins?

You have 1,2,5,10 and 50 pence and then £1

They all have the numbers on them

Sorry forgot about 20p

Well I think it can not be a popular dare in the USA where there are not so many forskins but who ever can fit the most coins in is the winner. At out school one of my brothers ws the 2p champion!! blink.gif

Can this be true?? 'Cos I haven't heard about it. ohmy.gif

(Though I'm thinking 'About f'kin time!! disgust1.gif). Hate the little bastards - they just end up lining your pockets. And yes, I know you can take 'em to the building society, but that's not the point...)

Even if 1p and 2p pieces were abolished, I'm pretty certain it would still be possible to send 1p and 2p payments. Or cheques for the same amount. Which is fair enough. unsure.gif

Though it would be much better to stop companies/councils/departments etc. charging 'little bits' of interest amounting to multiples of less than 5p. No need for little coins, problem solved. Yes, some prices would have to go up, but others could be rounded down, too.

That'd be the 20/50p?? wink.gif I'd much rather that £1 and 50p notes were brought back, and made of polymerised-plastic (and the same for £5 too). I hate £1 coins - they cause no end of trouble, they just bounce straight out of your hand. Like what happened in the chemists last week, or on the bus countless times... rolleyes.gif

I don't queue in the building society.
I use them to pay in the self checkout at the supermarket.

That's another way of doing it, I guess. But you need to be prepared, have a tin to carry them round in. I'm not usually quite that prepared... unsure.gif

WHy not use your Visa card to pay the difference?? Extreme, but better than another shed load of change. unsure.gif

What I normally do is pay, for example, 12p, in change, and the £3.50 or whatever on my card. smile.gif This is what I mean about funny prices. We have a lot of them about at the moment, since the VAT changed. unsure.gif

Living in NZ I love the fact the smallest denomination in a ten cent, no useless 1s and 2s.
