I love Kate with a passion, but I have to admit I found Aerial impossible to get into. I know that probably means that I'm pathetically shallow in some way or another, but in my defence I even like The Dreaming and Red Shoes albums. Aerial just didn't do it for me.
I'll be getting 50 Words for Snow for Xmas and I listened to the whole album via the link above, and it's definitely an improvement for me. I know it's going to take quite a few listens, but I already love Snowflake, Wild Man, and Snowed in at Wheeler Street, so I'm sure I'll end up playing it a damn sight more than Aerial.
BUT...and this is most definitely going to be seen as blasphemy by some...Kate seriously needs an editor. Someone to just tap her on the shoulder once in a while and tell her that every song doesn't HAVE to last 10 minutes plus. For me, the album is crying out for a few shorter songs and a bit more tempo in places. I don't expect her to go back to writing 3 minute pop songs like Babooshka or Wow, but something more along the lines of King of the Mountain (my favourite track off Aerial) wouldn't go amiss once in a while.
She's still a genius mind. Even though 13 and a half minutes about shagging a snowman should be too much in anyone's book.
