Purchasing airtime really necessary?, Buying a new phone

I've decided on the Samsung Galaxy Ace as I want something Android but can't justify the £500 price tag of the SII. Anyway it's £150 in Carphone Warehouse subject to buying £15 credit. As I have a contract I am happy with, this is something I would rather forgo paying. Is there any way out of paying for airtime or is this really a mandatory extra?
