QUOTE(jumbler @ Jun 30 2012, 12:44) QUOTE(ic1male @ Jun 30 2012, 12:39) Anyone ever done any Portuguese studies? I'm having a crack at Brazilian Portuguese. It's got a lovely sound to it at times. WHat's wrong with regular Portuguese?? There are actually quite developed Portuguese communities over here, if you live in the right place. Could be a good chance to meet some guys, and practice the language. Pillow talk anyone?

Regular Portuguese sounds almost Slavic and that doesn't appeal. I never did like the sound of Russian and those Eastern European languages. I don't think Portuguese is that close to Slavic languages, really. Can't definitely say about Brazilian and Portuguese, but they don't sound that different to me, either.

QUOTE(ic1male @ Jun 30 2012, 19:23) Only sounds like jumbler, not in similarity.
Quite. Portuguese is a Romance (if you'll pardon the pun!) language, thus directly related to provinicial Latin.

QUOTE(westham1980 @ Jul 1 2012, 14:08) I spent £300 on Rosetta Stone for Spanish. It's no fun on your own though I'm sure the general concensus is that Rosetta Stone is shite. Also, your local library should have all sorts of language learning resources for you to borrow for free. And if it's no fun on your own, go join an evening class or something similar? Google will be able to find something in your vicinity.

Doing this Portuguese is just as exciting now as learning French was back in school, i.e. it's the first language I've been really interested in for a long time.

Brazilian Portuguese is great! My boyfriend's Brazilian and I love hearing him speak Portuguese . . . I can understand more or less everything now and can speak a bit too. It's definitely more useful to learn than European Portuguese - people from Portugal understand the Brazilian accent easily because there's loads of Brazilian TV shows on in Portugal, whereas Brazilian people have trouble with the European accent . . . when we were in Lisbon my boyfriend spent the whole weekend complaining about their accent.

What about Mozambicans/South Africans?? I just don't like the Portuguese accent, too harsh-sounding, sorry.
